Hearts of Oak have begun the shake-up under new head coach Martin Koopman by releasing nine players ahead of the 2023-24 Ghana Premier League season.

The Phobians are determined to challenge for the league title this time around after they endured a disappointing 2022-23 campaign, finishing just four points above the relegation zone in 12th place.

Koopman was brought in on a two-year deal last week to replace David Ocloo, who was handed the reins on an interim basis in March following the sacking of Slavko Matic.

The Accra giants last won the championship three years ago and they’ve started preparing for an assault on a 22nd title by whittling down the squad with one week left in the transfer window.

Left-back Rashid Okine, centre-back Francis Adjetey, midfielders Faisal Adam Billey, Hamza Mohammed, Glason Awako, Clinton Appiah and Zakaria Yakubu, as well as strikers Benjamin Yorke and Yassan Ouatching have all departed the Accra Sports Stadium.

Koopman has been putting the remaining players through their paces at the Pobiman Sports Complex this week and will kick off his tenure with an away game against Real Tamale United.
