Kaizer Chiefs claimed their first win of the season in emphatic style, defeating AmaZulu in one of four DStv Premiership matches played across Friday 25 and Saturday 26 August 2023.

The Amakhosi crushed Usuthu (who have gone four league matches without a win and are yet to score a single goal this season) 3-0 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday evening, with Pule Mmodi netting early in each half and Edson Castillo wrapping up the result late on.

The victory only lifts the Soweto giants as high as 11th place – a full 11 points off the pace of leaders Mamelodi Sundowns – but at least coach Molefi Ntseki will feel some of the pressure easing after a slow start to his tenure.

Saturday’s late kick-off came from the Danie Craven Stadium and saw SuperSport United continue their strong start with a 2-1 away win over Stellenbosch FC.

Matsatsantsa claimed a third victory from four league matches this season, and strengthened their hold on second place, thanks to an equalising penalty from Ghampani Lungu and a late, opportunistic strike from the in-form Grant Margeman. Stellenbosch had earlier taken the lead via Jayden Adams.

Saturday also featured an afternoon match at the Mpumalanga Stadium in Hammarsdale which saw Golden Arrows claim a 3-2 win over Polokwane City.

Abafana Bes’thende secured a second victory of the new league season thanks to goals from Nduduzo Sibiya, Lungelo Nguse and Themba Mantshiyane, while Rise and Shine (who netted via Douglas Mapfumo and Lebohang Nkaki) suffered a second defeat of the campaign.

The weekend’s action opened on Friday with a fourth successive defeat for promoted club Cape Town Spurs, who went down 1-0 at the Athlone Stadium at the hands of Chippa United (their first win of the campaign). Ronaldo Maarman scored the only goal of the game late in the first half.

The DStv Premiership will resume with seven matches across the midweek of Tuesday 29 and Wednesday 30 August, headlined by a clash between Orlando Pirates and Cape Town City.
