Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rhulani Mokwena believes that Bafana Bafana are missing out on the qualities of Khuliso Mudau as he continues to be overlooked for Hugo Broos’ squad.

The 28-year-old right-back has won just four caps for his country and last featured in the 1-0 friendly win against Botswana on 27 September 2022.

In the meantime, Mudau – who is affectionately known as ‘Sailor’ – has won plaudits for his performances at Masandawana and was named PSL Defender of the Season after helping Mokwena’s side to a record sixth consecutive DStv Premiership title in 2022-23.

The defender was suspended for the MTN 8 semifinal, second-leg tie against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday and Mokwena admits he was sorely missed despite the Brazilians emerging 2-1 victors to advance to the final, where they will face defending champions Orlando Pirates.

“Losing ‘Sailor’ was huge. ‘Sailor’ defends well, he’s got speed, power, he attacks well,” Mokwena said.

“I heard [SuperSport commentator] Mark Gleeson in the commentary for the previous match against Pirates saying it boggles his mind that ‘Sailor’ is not in the national team. I fully agree with him.

“[The PSL’s 2022-23] Defender of the Season; he’s a specimen, his qualities are unbelievable.”
