Kaizer Chiefs will be the focus of attention on a truncated weekend of DStv Premiership action, which will see five matches played from Friday 27 to Sunday 29 October 2023.

With just three wins from their first nine league matches – and exits in both cup competitions, including the Carling Knockout last weekend – there was little surprise when Chiefs dispensed with the services of coach Molefi Ntseki earlier this week, leaving Cavin Johnson in temporary charge of the team as they prepare to face an in-form Golden Arrows on Saturday afternoon.

The Durban side, hosting this game at the Mpumalanga Stadium in Hammarsdale, are six games unbeaten (five wins, one draw) across all competitions and have racked up 12 goals in the sequence.

“I think the credit must be given to the boys because they are working hard, especially at training. It’s not about me… as coaches we are behind in everything and the players are the ones who deserve everything,” said Arrows coach and club legend Mabhuti Khenyeza.

“Credit doesn’t belong to us as coaches. I am not that type of a person who likes to take credit. I took enough when I was still a player. Our responsibility as coaches is only to give guidance to these players.”

The weekend’s action opens on Friday evening with Orlando Pirates looking to rise from their position just above the relegation zone when they host Polokwane City in Soweto.

The Buccaneers have played just six games (compared to eight or nine for most of the league), which goes some way to explaining their log status, though a goalless stalemate with AmaZulu in midweek was a third winless match from their last four Premiership outings.

Saturday, aside from Arrows v Chiefs, also features Chippa United looking to extend their unbeaten run of three matches when they host AmaZulu in Gqeberha, while Sunday sees TS Galaxy and Richards Bay looking to rise from the lower reaches of the log when they host Sekhukhune United at the Mbombela Stadium and Cape Town City at the King Zwelithini Stadium respectively.
