South Africa’s DStv Premiership resumed after the international break on Saturday with three matches across the country, headlined by Orlando Pirates being held to a goalless stalemate, while relegation candidates Cape Town Spurs suffered yet another defeat.

Pirates were looking to add to wins of Sekhukhune United and Kaizer Chiefs prior to November’s international window, but they were held 0-0 at the King Zwelithini Stadium by Richards Bay in the first of two afternoon kick-offs.

The Buccaneers lacked penetration in attack and were unable to capitalise on their dominance of possession. As for the Natal Rich Boyz, their performance was underpinned by a disciplined and determined defensive effort.

Elsewhere, AmaZulu’s recent run of form came to an abrupt end after they were beaten 1-0 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium by Stellenbosch FC (who themselves have now put together a six-game unbeaten run across all competitions).

Anicet Alain Oura scored the only goal of the game just past the half-hour mark as Stellies climbed into the top seven of the standings, pushing Pirates and AmaZulu down to eighth and ninth respectively.

In the early-evening kick-off at Cape Town Stadium, Cape Town Spurs suffered an 11th defeat from 12 league matches this season when they were beaten 2-1 by Royal AM.

Thwihli Thwahla secured the victory – a second from their last three league outings – thanks to goals from Khulekani Shezi and Menzi Masuku – to rise to 13th place on the standings, and four points clear of the relegation playoff zone.

As for the Urban Warriors, this result leaves them rock bottom on three points – seven shy of the relegation playoff zone currently occupied by Richards Bay.

The DStv Premiership will continue on Sunday 26 November with three further matches, headlined by a Soweto derby between Moroka Swallows and Kaizer Chiefs.
