Mamelodi Sundowns have reclaimed top spot in South Africa’s DStv Premiership after a 2-0 away win over Tshwane derby rivals SuperSport United on Wednesday night.
The Brazilians, who had not played in the domestic league since late September, were leapfrogged at the head of the table by Cape Town City this past weekend, but goals from Peter Shalulile and Lucas Ribeiro helped them to a record ninth successive Premiership win since the start of the season.
‘Downs lead the way with a full haul of 27 points from nine matches, while City are pushed back to second with 25 points from 13 matches. Matsatsantsa, who have now lost three in succession across all competitions, remain in third on 23 points from 13 matches.
Wednesday’s result completed the midweek action, which also featured a 3-0 win for Stellenbosch FC away to Cape Town Spurs on Tuesday which pushed the Maroons up to fourth place on 20 points.
For the Urban Warriors, meanwhile, it was a 12th defeat from 13 league matches this season, and they look destined for direct relegation back to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
The DStv Premiership will pause this weekend while the Carling Knockout semifinals are played, before returning next midweek with three matches: Orlando Pirates v Moroka Swallows, Sekhukhune United v Chippa United and AmaZulu v Sundowns.
