Cameroon have been dealt a massive blow with the news that Bryan Mbeumo will miss the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after undergoing ankle surgery this week.
The Brentford winger was forced off in the 40th minute of their 2-1 defeat to Brighton at the Amex on December 6, having opened the scoring from the penalty spot 13 minutes earlier.
Bees head coach Thomas Frank confirmed afterwards that Mbeumo had rolled his ankle and would definitely be unavailable for the trip to Sheffield United three days later.
However, the 24-year-old is now set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after Frank confirmed on Friday that he had an operation which will rule him out of the African showpiece early next year.
“Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo will be sidelined for three months following an operation on his ankle,” the West London club announced in a statement.
Frank added: “[Mbeumo] will not participate in the Africa Cup of Nations. Bryan is a positive guy. It’s tough to take, but he will come back stronger. He has a very good mindset.”
