Saturday’s DStv Premiership action saw differing fortunes for Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, while Golden Arrows’ rotten run continued.
Chiefs secured a hat-trick of wins in the league for the first time this season when they edged Richards Bay 1-0 at the FNB Stadium in a mid-afternoon kick-off, thanks to Nkosingiphile Ngcobo’s strike late in the first half.
Pirates, meanwhile, saw their unbeaten run in the league ended at six games after they were beaten 3-1 by SuperSport United at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.
Matsatsantsa took a firm hold of second place on the log, opening a four-point lead over third-placed Buccaneers, thanks in the main to rising star Shandre Campbell. The 18-year-old scored two goals and provided an assist for Bradley Grobler, as United fought back from Fortune Makaringe’s early opener for the Soweto side.
Elsewhere, Royal AM and Moroka Swallows played out a staid 0-0 draw at the Harry Gwala Stadium, while Polokwane City snapped a six-game winless streak across all competitions by defeating Chippa United 2-1 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium – with Oswin Appollis scoring a first-half brace for Rise and Shine.
Golden Arrows, meanwhile, have now suffered seven straight losses across all competitions after losing 2-0 at home to TS Galaxy at the Mpumalanga Stadium.
The Rockets secured victory – bouncing back from the disappointment of last weekend’s Carling Knockout final loss to Stellenbosch FC – thanks to goals from Samir Nurkovic and Nkosikhona Radebe.
Saturday’s results added to Friday’s 1-1 draw between AmaZulu and Cape Town Spurs, while the weekend’s action will be wrapped up on Sunday 24 December with a lone clash between Cape Town City and Mamelodi Sundowns.
