Saturday’s DStv Premiership action was headlined by champions and log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns being held to a 0-0 draw, while Kaizer Chiefs fought back to secure a share of the spoils in Polokwane.
Sundowns, who will end 2023 in charge of the title race thanks to a six-point buffer (plus three games in hand), will nonetheless be frustrated by a second successive draw after they were held to a stalemate by Polokwane City at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium – following on from another goalless draw with Cape Town City last weekend, for the only points the Brazilians have dropped thus far in 2023-24.
Sundowns were left even more angered thanks to a controversial disallowed goal late in the game from Peter Shalulile which arguably should have stood.
Chiefs, meanwhile, could only draw 1-1 against Sekhukhune United at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. The Amakhosi were chasing a fourth straight league win, but trailed to a fine headed goal from Elias Mokwana.
Fortunately for the Soweto giants, substitute Ranga Chivaviro provided a brilliant finish on the half-volley from long range to secure a share of the spoils.
The afternoon matches saw home wins for TS Galaxy (2-0) and Richards Bay (3-1) over Chippa United and SuperSport United respectively.
In the first clash at Mbombela Stadium, second-half goals from Sphiwe Mahlangu and Samir Nurkovic saw the Rockets continue their fine form with a third win from their last four league outings.
While the second clash at King Zwelithini Stadium saw the Natal Rich Boyz come from a goal down to triumph over their 10-man opponents thanks to strikes from Thabani Dube, Somila Ntsundwana and Thulani Gumede. It was just a third league win of the season for Richards Bay.
The DStv Premiership will wrap up for 2023 with a lone match on Sunday 31 December, as Cape Town Spurs and Cape Town City meet for a derby.
