Former Cameroon international Sebastien Bassong believes that Andre Onana sent a bad message after delaying his departure to the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.
It was originally agreed that Onana join the Cameroon camp after United’s Premier League tie against Spurs on Sunday, in time for the Indomitable Lions opening fixture against Guinea less than 24 hours later. However, it’s now been reported that Onana will not make it in time for his nation’s AFCON opener.
In delaying the process, Bassong believes that Onana showed a lack of respect to everyone associated with the AFCON.
“That sends such a bad message, not only for Cameroon, but for the respect people will have for the Africa Cup of Nations and for the way they should treat us, the equality,” Bassong told the BBC, as per the Mirror.
“If we don’t even respect ourselves how can you expect other people to treat you any different.
“I like Andre, I’ll always have his back when I have to, but when things like that happen.. the nation, the pride of the country and the continent is way an individual person.”
