Senegal secured a 2-0 victory over Guinea in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Group C match played at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro on Tuesday night.
Date: 23 January 2024
Guinea 0
Senegal 2 (Seck 61′, Ndiaye 90′)
First 45’: The first-half saw Senegal dominate possession, but they found it difficult to penetrate Guinea’s solid and impenetrable defence. Ismaila Sarr, who was lively, saw his goal-bound shot blocked in the seventh minute after a good move by the reigning AFCON champions. Sarr then tried his luck again in the 16th minute and once again his attempt was blocked, and the first-half ended with the two teams locked at 0-0.
Second 45’: The Lions of Teranga continued to control the game after the restart and they were awarded a free-kick in a promising area. Krepin Diatta then delivered a good free-kick into the Syli National’s box which was headed home by Abdoulaye Seck to make it 1-0 to Senegal in the 61st minute. The goal rattled the Guinea defence which looked shaky in the latter stages of the game and they conceded again in the 90th minute. This time Iliman Ndiaye netted with a low shot to seal Senegal’s 2-0 victory.
What’s next?: Senegal advanced to the Round of 16 as Group C winners and they are scheduled to face a team that will finish third in either Group A or B or F in the Round of 16. Guinea also booked their spot in the Round of 16 as one of the four best third-placed teams.
