Angola proved too strong for Namibia as they emerged as 3-0 winners in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 match at the Stade de Bouake in Bouake on Saturday night.
Date: 27 January 2024
Angola (2) 3 (Gelson Dala 38′, 42′, Mabululu 66′)
Namibia (0) 0
First 45: It was an action-packed first-half which saw both teams being reduced to 10 players. Neblu was dismissed in the 17th minute after the Angola goalkeeper had handled the ball outside the box while Lubeni Haukongo was sent off after the Namibia defender had collected his second yellow card of the game in the 40th minute. Angola were leading 2-0 at half-time courtesy of Gelson Dala’s brace having netted in the 38th minute and 42nd minute.
Second 45: Namibia looked to pull one back after the restart, but they were poor in the final third. Angola extended their lead six minutes after the hour-mark when Gelson Dala set up Mabululu who netted to make it 3-0 to Angola. Namibia had to find a way to pull one back in the latter stages of the Southern African Derby encounter, but Angola were solid at the back, and ultimately, the match ended in a 3-0 win in favour of the 2010 AFCON hosts.
What’s next?: Angola progressed to the quarter-finals where they will face either Nigeria or Cameroon on 2 February. Namibia, on the other hand, bowed out of the tournament and will now travel back home.
