Ivory Coast secured a 5-4 win over Senegal on penalties after a 1-1 draw in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 match at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro on Monday night.
Date: 29 January 2024
Senegal (1) 1 (Diallo 4′)
Ivory Coast (0) 1 (Kessie 86′)
First 45’: Senegal got off to a bright start and they took the lead in the fourth minute when Sadio Mane’s cross found Habib Diallo who scored from close range to give Senegal a 1-0 lead. The goal did not rattle Ivory Coast who reacted by launching attacks which saw Seko Fofana force goalkeeper Edouard Mendy into making a smart save and the score was 1-0 to Senegal during the half-time break.
Second 45’: The second-half was dominated by Ivory Coast with Mendy forced to produce fantastic saves to deny Franck Kessie in the 73rd minute and Nicolas Pepe four minutes later with Senegal under siege. Mendy then conceded a penalty in the 81st minute when he fouled Pepe in the box. Kessie then converted the resultant penalty to make it 1-1 and the match went into extra-time after a draw in regulation time.
Extra-Time & Penalties: The two teams failed to find the back of the net in extra-time and the game went into a penalty shootout. Kessie converted the last spot-kick as Ivory Coast emerged as 5-4 winners on penalties on the night.
What’s next?: Ivory Coast advanced to the quarter-finals where they will face either Mali or Burkina Faso in the last eight on 3 February at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké. Senegal, on the other hand, crashed out of the tournament – failing to successfully defend the AFCON title in the process.
