Senegal winger Krepin Diatta has labelled the Confederation of African Football (CAF) “corrupt” following his team’s exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on Monday.
The defending champions lost to tournament hosts Ivory Coast 5-4 on penalties in the round of 16 after the match had finished 1-1 after extra time.
Aliou Cisse’s side got off to a flying start at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium when Habib Diallo opened the scoring in the fourth minute, but Franck Kessie equalised from the penalty four minutes from time to keep the Elephants’ hopes alive.
Moussa Niakhate failed to convert the third spot-kick for the Lions of Teranga in the shootout as their title defence came to a heartbreaking end.
However, Diatta was incensed by the referee’s decision not to award Senegal a penalty in the second half after Ismaila Sarr tangled with Odilon Kossounou inside the box, with the incident not even reviewed by VAR, who intervened late on to rescue the Ivorians.
The Monaco man made his accusations to CAF staff in the mixed zone as he left the stadium in Yamoussoukro.
“You have killed us. You are corrupt. Keep your African Cup,” he was overheard saying by reporters.
“You got to the VAR to give them a penalty, while our guy (Sarr) picks up the ball 40 metres from goal, goes on a run into the box and you don’t want to go to VAR?
“I’m sorry, but that is going to far. I’m really sorry, but they have killed our competition.”
