After yet another exciting encounter in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations this week, Mali advanced to the quarter-finals of the tournament after their 2-1 win over Burkina Faso at the Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium.

Date: 30 January 2024

Mali: (1) 2 (Tapsoba 3’ OG, Sinayoko 47’ )

Burkina Faso: (0) 1 (B.Traore 57’)

Mali will now take on host nation Ivory Coast in a keenly anticipated quarter-final clash which will be scheduled for the 3rd of February.

Starting the game immediately on the back foot, Burkina Faso defender Edmond Tapsoba got his name on the scoreboard for the wrong reason.  As Sikou Niakate lobbed the ball into the box from deep position on the pitch, Amadou Haidara’s header ricocheted off the post before falling into Tapsoba’s path who failed to clear the ball and subsequently put the ball into his own net.

With a goal to the good, Mali put the Stallions under immense pressure toward the end of the half. Burkina Faso star Hamari Traore found himself bombing down the right-flank in search of a goal, however, the Mali backline did enough to ward off the advancing runs.

Mali doubled their lead in the 47th minute as Lassine Sinayoko added his name to the scoreboard. After dodging the offside line, the Mali attacker finished with aplomb by slotting the ball between the goalkeeper’s legs.

Burkina Faso received a penalty in the 57th minute as Boubakar Kouyaté was spotted handling the ball inside his area by the VAR official. Aston Villa star Bertrand Traore then sent the Mali goalkeeper the wrong way with a classy finish.
