Sunderland Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman has revealed that the Black Cats pursued Manchester United winger Amad Diallo throughout the recent transfer window.
During his loan spell with the Championship side last season, Diallo managed to score 14 goals in 43 appearances as he continued to showcase his talents as one of the best up-and-coming African talents in Europe today.
Since returning to United, Diallo only recently made his way back to full fitness after sustaining an injury during pre-season. Facing limited game time at Old Trafford, Speakman mentioned that Sunderland attempted to sign Diallo throughout the January transfer window.
“Amad would have been one of those three or four targets [that we were working on] but there are factors we have no control over,” Speakman mentioned, as per Si.com.
“There’s not been as many transactions. And ultimately then you’re waiting on player availability most of the time, whether that’s on a permanent basis or a loan basis.
“It ran its course that he wasn’t available. He’s not turned up anywhere else. We stayed in that for as long as we possibly could.”
