Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena has said that South Africa exceeded expectations at the recent 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Hugo Broos and company managed a third-place finish at the showpiece, following their 4-2 penalty defeat against Nigeria in the semi-finals.

While Broos boldly claimed that the rest of the African continent now know South Africa, Mokwena believes that Bafana gave a good account of themselves at the Ivory Coast showpiece.

“Even though we know we can do better. You know, we know we could have beaten Nigeria, and that’s the truth based on the performance also,” Mokwena said, as per FarPost.

“They have made great strides, and they have made the entire nation happy.

“So I’m proud of our national team and relatively the success that we achieved because I think we surpassed the expectations of many people but huge kudos to everyone involved. The association [SAFA], the Bafana coach Hugo Broos and the group of players that went to represent us.”
