Cape Verde star Bebe believes his side was fortunate that Liverpool FC superstar Mohamed Salah was sidelined during their recent clash with Egypt.

The two teams played to a 2-2 draw in their final 2023 AFCON Group B match with an injured Salah watching from the stands at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

Both teams progressed to the Round of 16, where Egypt were eliminated by DR Congo and Cape Verde defeated Mauritania before losing to South Africa in the quarterfinals.

“We were really lucky that Mohamed Salah was injured when we played Egypt because he is such an influential player,” Bebe, who is a former Manchester United player, said on King Fut.

“When you play against any opposition, you always want to have your star players fit and available. Any team wishes to have a player like him.”

Bebe, who is on the books of Spanish club Rayo Vallecano, scored once in the 2023 AFCON finals, with his solitary goal coming against Mozambique.
