Zamalek have announced that Mohamed Abdel Shafy will undergo surgery in Germany after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during training.
The 38-year-old left-back had made eight appearances in all competitions for the White Knights this term after choosing to go back on his decision to retire at the end of the 2022-23 campaign.
However, Abdel Shafy is unlikely to return to action before the end of the current season after the Egyptian Premier League side confirmed on Sunday he had sustained a serious knee injury.
“Abdel Shafy suffered a cruciate ligament tear after medical examinations he underwent recently,” the club’s team doctor, Mohamed Osama, said.
“Abdel Shafy underwent intensive medical examinations to determine the extent of the injury and to determine the appropriate treatment protocol.
“The player will travel to Germany in the coming days for consultation with a doctor and to undergo surgery, based on the decision of Hussein Labib, the club’s president, who made the decision.”
Jose Gomes’ side are already without Mahmoud Hamdy for the long term after the centre-back also sustained an ACL injury in May 2023 and has yet to make a single appearance this season.
