Nigeria vice-captain William Troost-Ekong has undergone surgery on a hamstring injury he sustained at the recent 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, according to respected journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The 30-year-old centre-back is said to have picked up the injury in the 1-0 win over Ivory Coast during the group stages, although he went on to skipper the Super Eagles to the final.

Troost-Ekong scored three goals in six appearances, including the opener in the 2-1 defeat to the Elephants in the decider and was named Player of the Tournament.

However, Romano revealed on Monday that the PAOK defender arrived in Finland for an operation, but suggested that he will return to action before the end of the season.

“Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong, in Finland for minor surgery,” Romano said on social media. “The injury occurred during the 2nd group stage game vs Ivory Coast.

“Despite the injury, William became Player of the Tournament… and he’s expected to return to play for PAOK towards the end of the season.”
