Immediate Iconic Success

Following an historic inaugural campaign in the MLS, St Louis City mentor Bradley Carnell now has a job on his hands to maintain the standards he set last season after a slow start to the current campaign.

With a coach who had no prior experience in a permanent role, along with a group of players who had never played together beforehand, St.Louis City blew the MLS conference away as last season’s surprise package.

Carnell, who instilled a workman like culture at the club, St.Louis City’s Gengenpress style of play guided them to an historic Western Conference title at the first time of asking.

Among several broken records, St.Louis City became the MLS expansion club with most wins in their debut season and also qualified for the 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup.

Why are St.Louis City struggling this season?

Given that they’re only seven games into the season, St.Louis City have ample room to improve going forward. However, the loss of Nicholas Gioacchini caused a significant imbalance in Carnell’s attacking department.

Gioacchini, who signed for Serie B outfit Como in January, scored 10 goals in 32 MLS games last season. With Carnell forced to reshuffle his attacking pack, conceding 11 goals in seven games could suggest a potential problem in the St.Louis’ defensive department.

Where to next for the South African duo?

Amid a stuttering start to the 2024 campaign, Njabulo Blom’s recent return from injury comes as a much-needed boost of positivity for Carnell and company. The former Kaizer Chiefs star will offer stability in the middle of the park, while his dribbling ability could provide an answer to an attacking line that has been short of inspiration this season.

As for Carnell, the former Bafana Bafana international signed a contract extension on the 31st of January, through the end of 2025. This could well suggest that the St.Louis board are pleased with Carnell at the helm as they look to emulate their immediate success shown last year.
