Los Angeles Galaxy have confirmed that Ghanaian star Joseph Paintsil was racially abused during their match against Los Angeles FC.

The dreadlocked attacker was targeted by racists on social media as Galaxy succumbed to a 2-1 defeat to their local rivals Los Angeles FC in an MLS match on Sunday.

Galaxy made it clear that they are standing by the player and are ready to hand him the necessary support to continue his career in the USA.

The five-time MLS champions released the following statement regarding the incident.

“LA Galaxy forward Joseph Paintsil was the victim of a racist social media incident following Saturday’s match against LA FC. The club stands with Joseph and anyone who has suffered racist abuse through social media and anywhere else,” a club statement read.

“The incident was immediately reported to the Major League Soccer. We are working with the MLS to ensure Joseph has all the resources and support he needs at this time.

“There is no place for racism in our community, in our league or anywhere else in society.”

The Ghana international moved to the USA in February this year from Belgian giants KRC Genk.
