Former Ghana international Samuel Inkoom insists Andre Ayew is needed to play a motivating role for the youngsters in the Black Stars squad.

There have been calls for Ayew, who turns 35 in December, to be dropped from the national team as some Ghanaian fans believe that the Black Stars captain is past his best.

However, Inkoom, who won silver medals with Ghana at the 2010 and 2015 Africa Cup of Nations finals, has backed Ayew and other senior players in Otto Addo’s squad.

“I believe if you have a team, you have to have the experienced ones and the young ones because the young one cannot just come like that. You are supposed to have experienced one inside the team that can motivate them and can also encourage them,” Inkoom said on Ghana Soccer Net.

“I don’t think at the moment we have to maybe the senior players out of the team. They have to be in the team, give the young ones confidence, and say a lot of encouraging stuff because I think that is how a team is supposed to be,” the 34-year-old retired right-back added.

Andre Ayew, who plies his trade in France for Le Havre, was part of the Black Stars squad that lost to Nigeria and drew with Uganda last month.
