Sebastien Haller has suffered a fresh setback after picking up an injury on his first start for Borussia Dortmund since winning the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast.

The 29-year-old striker, who scored the winner for the Elephants as they beat Nigeria 2-1 in the AFCON final on home soil two months ago, returned from the tournament carrying an ankle injury.

Haller returned to action for Dortmund as a second-half substitute in a 2-0 win over Bayern Munich on March 30 and he was given another brief run-out against Stuttgart seven days later.

However, his first start in seven months lasted just 10 minutes after being caught on the foot in a challenge from Borussia Monchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi on Saturday.

BVB head coach Edin Terzic revealed after his side’s 2-1 victory at Borussia Park that Haller injured the same foot that had ruled him out for five games earlier this year, but is hopeful the Ivorian will make a speedy recovery.

“On his first touch of the ball, there was a challenge in which he unfortunately injured himself once again on the foot that has already been causing him problems for months.

“He was able to step on it lightly after the game and believes that it’s not too bad. We’re hoping that he won’t be out for a long time.”

Haller has yet to get off the mark in 14 Bundesliga appearances for Dortmund this term after scoring nine goals in his debut season at the club.
