Nigeria international Ademola Lookman has reflected on the 2023 AFCON finals in Ivory Coast where he was the Super Eagles’ best attacker.

The Atalanta BC star netted three goals in seven matches as the West African giants went all the way to the final where they lost to tournament hosts.

It was Lookman’s first major tournament with Nigeria since he changed his international allegiance from England having won the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup with the European country.

“My favourite goal was the second goal against Cameroon, it gave me goose bumps, my parents were watching on,” Lookman said on Score Nigeria.

“I would say the Equatorial Guinea game, we played at 2pm, the weather was tough,” he replied when he was asked.

The diminutive player was also asked how it felt to be the joint-highest goalscorer for Nigeria in his first-ever AFCON tournament and he said; “Very happy, obviously as an attacking player, we always want to help the team by doing that and the team was amazing, everyone helped out,” he said.

“It was amazing, first tournament with the team, it was something I really, really enjoyed.”

Lookman is excited to be in the Nigeria squad that will face South Africa and Benin in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June 2024.
