Taiwo Awoniyi has expressed confidence that Nottingham Forest will beat the drop this season despite suffering a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Chelsea on Saturday.
The Tricky Trees were leading 2-1 with 15 minutes remaining on the clock at the City Ground before two goals in the final 10 minutes from Raheem Sterling and Nicolas Jackson completed the turnaround for the Blues.
Awoniyi didn’t see much action after only being brought on in the 87th minute as he continued to step up his recovery from an injury sustained at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are almost certainly guaranteed Premier League football next term, having seen Luton go down 3-1 to West Ham at the London Stadium over the weekend.
Forest are three points clear of the Hatters in 17th place with a vastly superior goal difference ahead of their clash against relegated Burnley on the final day of the campaign.
The Nigeria international is convinced the club will retain their top-flight status, but doesn’t want to leave anything to chance against the Clarets at Turf Moor on May 19.
“I think for us, we’ll be there. We’ll be in the Premier League next season, but the most important thing is to win the next game,” he said after the Chelsea loss.
