Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag believes that Amad Diallo deserved to start during his side’s 1-0 defeat against Arsenal in the Premier League this past Sunday.

The Ivorian received a standing ovation from the Old Trafford faithful for his performance against the Gunners, after making his first start for the club in 886 days.

Prior to being forced off in the 70th minute owing to injury, Diallo proved to be the Red Devil’s attacker-in-chief and often had Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu on the back foot.

Reflecting on the 21-year-old’s performance, Ten Hag said that the tricky winger warranted a start in his starting XI ahead of the ‘options’ on the right-wing.

“I think Amad deserved it,” Ten Hag said, as per the Manchester Evening News.

“There was a lot of competition in that position, he was injured a long time, he built himself back and he deserved it.

“But across the season with Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, we have options there. Rashford played there as well. Today, he deserved that position and he played very good.

“We expected him to. He was brave, he was creative, defended very good so I was pleased with his performance.”
