Mali international Kamory Doumbia beat Ghana captain Andre Ayew to an accolade at the 2023/24 French Ligue 1 awards ceremony.

Le Havre star Ayew’s stunning overhead kick against Lorient in February 2024 was nominated for the Goal of the Season accolade.

However, Ayew lost out to Brest midfielder Doumbia’s powerfully struck volley from the edge of the area in a win over Lens in December 2023.

“Doumbia, a Malian international on loan with Brest from Stade de Reims, is a deserved winner of the Just Fontaine award for the best goal of the season, taking the honors with a powerfully struck volley from the edge of the area in a 4-0 win over Lens in December,” a statement on the league website read.

Doumbia and Ayew will be hoping to be included in their respective country’s squads ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Mali and Ghana will meet in June in a crucial World Cup qualifier in Bamako.
