Zamalek supporters took to the streets of Mit Okba, a district in Giza, to celebrate the CAF Confederation Cup triumph around the club’s headquarters on Sunday night and Monday morning.
The Egyptian heavyweights defeated RS Berkane 1-0 on Sunday night – courtesy of a first-half goal from Ahmed Hamdi – to see the tie locked at 2-2 on aggregate.
However, the White Knights won the two-legged final on the away goal rule, thus securing their second Confederation Cup title.
“We won the title thanks to our strong mentality. I am so happy to be the manager of this club. The fans were incredible tonight. We have amazing fans and we celebrated together in an incredible way,” said manager Jose Gomez.
Zamalek will play in the CAF Super Cup against the Champions League winners, which will be either arch rivals Al Ahly or Esperance de Tunis (the teams played out a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their final on Saturday, with the decisive return game set for May 25 in Cairo).
Gomes noted, “I don’t have a preference between Al Ahly or Esperance. I only want to win the Super Cup title and make our fans happy. Esperance have a Portuguese manager [Miguel Cardoso] and he is my friend while Al Ahly are a strong team and they have a great manager [Marcel Koller].”
Ahmed Sayed Zizo, who was outstanding through both legs of the final, expressed his emotions after the match: “I am so happy to win this title. Everyone deserves this happiness. I would like to congratulate our amazing fans who never gave up on us even when we didn’t win titles.”
