RS Berkane head coach Mouin Chaabani was left to rue his side’s missed chances in the second leg of the CAF Confederation Cup final as they lost out on the title to Zamalek on away goals.
The Oranges Boys won the first leg 2-1 in Morocco on May 12, but failed to get that all-important goal in Cairo on Sunday after Ahmed Hamdi had given the White Knights a 23rd-minute lead.
The final finished 2-2 on aggregate and the Egyptian giants lifted the trophy for the second time in their history thanks to their resolute defending at the Cairo International Stadium.
Chaabani hailed his players’ efforts throughout the competition as they lost just once in 14 matches, but felt a dip in concentration at the final hurdle cost them a third title in five years.
“Congratulations to the players for their efforts throughout the competition. Zamalek’s defense was formidable, and our team failed to capitalise on the chances we had,” the Tunisian tactician said.
“This could be due to our players’ lack of focus or the solid defensive preparations of Zamalek, who played particularly well in defence. Additionally, we lost 20 to 25 minutes of the first half.
“Thank you to all the players for their efforts. We will return stronger in the future. Congratulations to Zamalek, and good luck to RS Berkane.”
