Is Zamalek’s “crisis” over exaggerated?
When the season began for Egyptian powerhouse side Zamalek, it looked to be not what was expected from them as they struggled to find consistency in their performances. This ultimately left the team in the bottom half of the Egyptian Premier League table, which is a place that is foreign to them.
CAF Confederation Cup triumph
Despite all the noise, the team won the CAF Confederation Cup after defeating Moroccan side RSB Berkane in the final that was played over two legs, winning on away goals. They had fallen behind 2-1 in the first leg in Morocco one week before the rematch at the Cairo International Stadium.
In the 23rd minute of the second leg, Zamalek’s striker Ahmed Hamdi gave the team the lead, levelling the score and giving the Egyptians a much-needed victory to boost their morale.
It was the second time that the White Knights won the trophy, previously claiming the title in the 2018/2019 season for the first time.
No need to worry, at least for now…
Since they’ve won the continental competition, the team can now focus their attention on the league. Currently in 13th place, they do have enough time to make up ground as they have eight games in hand.
With the boost of winning the Confederation Cup, the team will keep the same energy to ensure a dignified finish in the Egyptian Premier League. And their arch rivals Al Ahly are eighth on the log, with as many as nine goals in hand.
The critics might perhaps be making the situation look worse than it actually is, by the looks of it Zamalek are on course to having a decent season and avoiding embarrassment in the process.
