As one of the most exciting fixtures in this week’s CAF 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Morocco are looking to increase their lead at the top of Group E when they host Zambia at Stade Adrar on Friday night.
Morocco were originally scheduled to face Eritrea on the 16th of November 2023 in their first fixture, however, the game was cancelled as a result of Eritrea withdrawing from the World Cup qualifiers. Reports in the media at the time suggested that Eritrea pulled out of the qualifiers owing to fears that players would attempt to seek asylum on their travels.
Nonetheless, the Atlas Lions kicked-off their qualifying campaign with a 2-0 win against Tanzania at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium on the 21st of November last year.
Despite playing only one match so far, Morocco are currently sitting at the top of Group E, while Zambia occupy the 2nd spot.
The Copper Bullets commenced their qualifying bid with a 4-2 win over Congo at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on the 17th of November 2023, as Patson Daka (2), Lameck Banda and Fashion Sakala got their names on the scoreboard.
Zambia were unable to carry their winning momentum over to their subsequent fixture, as they suffered a 2-1 loss against Niger at Stade de Marrakech four days later.
