Liberia were made to sweat for a 1-0 victory over Sao Tome and Principe in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match played at the Stade Municipal d’Oujda in Oujda, Morocco on Sunday.

The win saw the Lone Stars climb up to the third spot in the Group H standings, while the Falcons and True Parrots Team remain sixth on the table. Liberia will host Tunisia in March 2025 when the World Cup qualifiers resume and Sao Time will be away to Equatorial Guinea.

The Lone Stars started the match brightly and the lively Terry Sackor was denied by goalkeeper Petro Gonvalevs Mateus just seven minutes into the encounter before the Liberia attacker hit the woodwork in the 19th minute.

Mateus was then called into action in the 23rd minute and this time he denied Mohammed Sangare. The score was 0-0 at half-time with Sao Tome having registered one shot on target in the first-half when Ronaldo was denied by keeper Abdulai Koulibaly in the 15th minute.

The Falcons and True Parrots Team defended much better after the restart and the Lone Stars struggled to create chances. Coach Mario Marinica decided to refresh Liberia’s attack by introducing William Gibson and Peter Wilson in the 55th minute.

However, it was 88th-minute Sheikh Sesay who made an impact as the Gaborone United player hit the back of the net in the 90th minute after the Sao Tome defence was exposed and Liberia held on to secure a 1-0 victory over their stubborn hosts.
