Al Ahly continued their pursuit of Egyptian Premier League leaders Pyramids FC with a key 1-0 win over Al Ittihad at Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria on Tuesday night.

Mahmoud Kahraba’s goal in the second half earned the defending champions an important three points, as they continued to chase down Pyramids in the title race.

After a goalless first half, Akram Tawfik thought he had opened the scoring in the 59th minute from a powerful shot, but his effort was disallowed by VAR.

However, nine minutes later, Kahraba scored the winning goal in the match with a fantastic header after receiving a beautiful cross from Hussein El Shahat.

As a result of the win, the Red Eagles closed the gap to Pyramids to 17 points, having played six games less than the leaders.

“It is a well-deserved victory for us against a strong defensive side. Al Ittihad defended with 10 players, which made the game more difficult for us,” Marcel Koller, Al Ahly’s manager, stated in the post-match press conference.

The Red Eagles are in a clinical period of the season as they are facing a time crunch to play all of their postponed matches and they can’t afford to drop any point if they want to return to the top of the table.

Koller added, “We want to score three and four goals every match but it’s not easy because every team gives their best against us.”

After playing two matches in Alexandria, Al Ahly will be back to play in Cairo on Friday when they face El Dakhelya at Al Salam Stadium. Next Tuesday then brings the Cairo derby against arch rivals Zamalek.
