The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has poured cold water on claims that contact was made with Herve Renard in the search to find Finidi George’s successor.
George resigned as Nigeria head coach earlier this month following the NFF’s decision to bring in a foreign technical advisor in the wake of the recent 2026 World Cup qualifying results against South Africa and Benin.
The Super Eagles are fifth in Group C of qualifying after going winless in their opening four matches, with George overseeing a 1-1 draw against Bafana Bafana in Uyo followed by a 2-1 defeat to the Cheetahs in Abidjan.
Reports emerged earlier this week that Nigerian football’s governing body held talks with Renard, who will step down from his role as head coach of the France women’s national team after the 2024 Olympics.
The Frenchman has an impressive CV after winning the Africa Cup of Nations title with Zambia and Ivory Coast, while he guided Saudi Arabia to the 2022 World Cup.
However, an unnamed NFF official has denied the links, telling BBC Africa: “This report is inaccurate. We’ve not contacted Renard or his reps (representatives).”
