Anthony Modeste has bid farewell to Al Ahly after the Egyptian club announced his departure on Sunday evening.

The French striker spent a season on the books of the Red Eagles, having joined as a free agent last August.

“The day has come and it’s time to say goodbye. I am proud and grateful to have been part of this historic club,” Modeste said in his farewell message.

The 36-year-old enjoyed a successful time in Cairo. He scored five times and provided four assists from 29 appearances from all competitions, and helped Al Ahly win three trophies – including the CAF Champions League.

Modeste added “Thank you to all the fans for their incredible support and love. You are beyond great and made this experience truly special.

“I also want to thank the coaches, staff and above all my teammates. In the last 10 months I have been able to gain a lot of new skills and learn so much more.”

Modeste’s departure means that the Red Eagles will complete the Egyptian Premier League campaign with only two strikers, Wessam Abou Ali and Mahmoud Abdelmonem Kahraba.

Al Ahly will continue their league catch-up with a match on Monday night at the Military Academy Stadium in Cairo against Tala’ea El Gaish.

Coach Marcel Koller will be without injured players Percy Tau, Omar Kamal and Ahmed Nabil Koka, while Kahraba has been temporarily dropped from the squad as a disciplinary measure.

Al Ahly, the defending champions, are second in the table with 48 points, 14 points behind the leaders, Pyramids, who have played five matches more.
