The Confederation of African Football has confirmed that the next edition of the CAF Super Cup will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The annual clash between the winners of the CAF Champions League and the winners of the CAF Confederation Cup is a highlight on the African football calendar, and takes on special significance for 2024 as it brings together Cairo derby rivals Al Ahly and Zamalek.
The Red Eagles (Champions League winners) and the White Knights (Confederation Cup winners) will add another chapter to their legendary rivalry when they meet in the Super Cup in Riyadh on Friday 27 September. The kick-off time and venue are yet to be confirmed.
“The partnership between CAF and Saudi Arabia is based on the excellent relationship and mutual commitment of both the parties,” said CAF president Patrice Motsepe.
“CAF is excited to work together and partner with the General Entertainment Authority. We look forward to the TotalEnergies CAF Super Cup Final 2024 between two of the most popular and successful Clubs in Africa, namely Al Ahly and Zamalek.”
This is not the first time Riyadh has hosted a clash between the Egyptian heavyweights, with Al Ahly defeating Zamalek 2-0 in the Egypt Cup final played in the Saudi capital as recently as March of this year.
However, the most recent Cairo derby in the Egyptian Premier League, set for late June, was marred by controversy, with Zamalek refusing to participate due to a dispute with the league authorities and the Egyptian Football Association. This saw Al Ahly awarded a walkover win.
