Al Ahly have closed in on yet another Egyptian Premier League title after they claimed a 1-0 win over Pyramids at the 30 June Stadium on Monday night.
The result saw the Red Eagles complete a league ‘double’ over their championship rivals – having won 3-2 at Cairo Stadium 10 days earlier – and take a huge stride toward a second successive title and a 44th overall.
Pyramids didn’t lose a single game in the Premier League from November 2023 and were on an incredible run of form with 14 wins in a row. However, their two losses to Ahly could cost them a first-ever title.
Wessam Abou Ali, who scored a brace in the first game between the teams, put on another incredible performance on Monday night, netting the sole goal in the game, taking his tally to 11 goals in the league this season.
“It is a great win against a very strong side who are still top of the table. The players were fantastic tonight; they did everything we told them and I am happy with their performance.” Marcel Koller, Al Ahly manager, stated after the match.
Despite the defeat, Pyramids are still leading the league table with two points ahead of Al Ahly, but the defending champions have played three games fewer.
However, Koller believes that the title race is still on, stating “We haven’t won the league yet. The title race is not over. We still have eight matches and each one will be difficult.”
