Al Ahly and Egypt defender Mohamed Abdelmonem has emerged as a possible replacement for Riccardo Calafiori at Serie A side Bologna.

Calafioro is set to sign for Premier League giants Arsenal and, according to Italian football journalist Gianluca di Marzio, Abdelmonem could replace the Italian centre-back at the Rossoblu.

Abdelmonem, 25, is acknowledged as one of the top defenders in African football, having played a key role for both Al Ahly and the Egyptian national team.

The Red Eagles fans will never forget Abdelmonem’s memorable goal against Wydad Casablanca in Morocco in the 2023 CAF Champions League final, which earned Al Ahly their 11th continental crown.

The Egyptian defender was also part of the Egyptian national team squad that reached the AFCON final in 2023, losing the title on penalties to Senegal. His standout performance earned him a spot in the competition’s best XI.

Abdelmonem has long attracted interest from European and Arabian clubs, but Al Ahly always refused any offers.

However, the club would be open for a sale if they receive a proper offer from one the top leagues in Europe.

“We didn’t receive an official offer yet. However, the player is open to begin a new chapter in his career with a club that has the ambition to win titles,” one of the player’s entourage told Filgoal.

Bologna are looking for reinforcements in this summer’s transfer window in preparation for an exciting season, marking their return to Champions League action 59 years after their only appearance in the competition in 1964-65.
