Tunisia’s Stade Tunisien and Al Hilal Benghazi of Libya claimed away wins as the 2024-25 CAF Confederation Cup season got rolling on Friday.

In Juba, South Sudan, ST secured victory in the first leg of the first round qualifying tie thanks to a goal 10 minutes into the second half from Ousmane Ouattara – making them clear favourites to go on and face USM Alger in the second round.

In Benghazi, Al Hilal, playing as the ‘away’ team against Uganda’s Kitara FC, claimed a thrilling 3-2 triumph.

The Libyan ‘visitors’ went 2-0 up inside the first 21 minutes thanks to goals from Mohamed Shaaban and Talha Rizk, but the East Africans brought themselves back into the game via Brian Ahebwa.

Al Hilal reclaimed a two-goal cushion via Faisal Elbadry, but needed to hang tough in the final portion of the game thanks to an 80th minute strike from Kitara’s Denis Omedi.

The final match of the day was played in Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania, as Somalia’s Horseed FC and Rukinzo FC of Burundi played out a goalless stalemate.

The first round continues on Saturday, headlined by evening matches pitting CS Constantine (Algeria) against Police FC (Rwanda), as well as Union de Touarga (Morocco) against RC Abidjan (Ivory Coast).
