Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier fully expects the team to clear the first hurdle in the 2024-25 CAF Champions League as they prepare to take on Al Merreikh Bentiu on Sunday.

K’Ogalo are making their first appearance in Africa’s elite club competition since 2020-21 when they lost 8-1 on aggregate to CR Belouizdad in the first round.

Leo Neiva’s side recently took part in the 2024 Kagame Interclub Cup, although they failed to qualify for the knockout stages after finishing third in Group B.

The squad flew out to Juba on Thursday to acclimatise to the weather conditions in South Sudan and Rachier rates their chances of advancing to the second qualifying round after seeing progress being made over the last month.

“The team has improved … far better than the one that played at Cecafa [Kagame Interclub Cup]. We don’t expect to exit at the preliminary stage,” he said.

“We are leaving early to acclimatise to the weather in Sudan.”

Should the Kenyan giants beat Al Merreikh Bentiu, they will face defending African champions Al Ahly in the second round of qualifying.
