Egypt captain Mohamed Salah was ecstatic after setting a new English Premier League record during Saturday’s 2024/25 English Premier League opener.
The world-class winger’s 65th-minute strike put the Reds 2-0 up over Ipswich Town soon after setting up Diogo Jota, who opened the scoring, with Arne Slot’s side then preserving that lead to earn all three points.
Salah’s goal at Portman Road was his ninth on the first day of an English top-flight season – moving him clear of Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer on the list of the Premier League’s most prolific opening-day marksmen.
“I don’t know! Hopefully I’ll keep going like this through the whole season, not just the first game,” Salah, 32, said on the club’s website when asked why he is so productive on the opening day of seasons.
“I try to help the team all the time. The most important thing is that the team wins the game. I’m always happy to score goals and to give assists so I just need to carry on.
The match against Ipswich was the 350th appearance of Salah’s incredible Reds career having netted 212 goals and marked the start of his eighth season with the club.
