Malian star Yves Bissouma will be handed another ‘ban’ after the Tottenham Hotspur star scored on his return suspension.
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou jokingly said this after the central midfielder netted in the team’s 4-0 win over Everton FC in an English Premier League match played on Saturday.
Bissouma missed Spurs’ first match of the season against Leicester City due to an internal disciplinary measure after he posted a video of himself inhaling laughing gas on social media.
“I’m going to ban him next week and bring him back! It seems to work. He is a fantastic player. He was a key contributor today,” Postecoglou said on GOAL.
The comment was delivered with a smile, but the underlying message was clear: Bissouma is a valuable player for Tottenham, but his path to redemption requires more than just a goal. He further emphasised that Bissouma still has work to do, both on and off the pitch, to become the best version of himself.
“It’s a good start. He’s still got work to do. I’m not doubting his footballing quality. We want to make him the best version of himself. That starts off the field as much as on it,” the Australian tactician added.
“We know Biss is a good footballer. It’s about him being the best version of himself and he will only get there if, as we’ve spoken a few times, discipline is a big thing for him and I thought it was a disciplined performance for him today you know.
“Not just the goal he scored, but he had a really important job for us. He knew they’d sort of play fairly direct and he had to be there to mop up second balls and intercept things and he was clean for the most part in possession. So good performance.”
