Gor Mahia stamped their authority over Al Merreikh in their latest CAF Champions League first preliminary round fixture, while the likes of Al Hilal and Monastir advanced to their next phase of the competition.
Al Merreikh took a 1-0 aggregate advantage to the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday and shocked the home side by taking an early lead in the reverse fixture. While Samuel Akinbinu put Al Merreikh ahead in the 7th minute, Chris Ochieng levelled matters a minute later.
It was all Gor Mahia from their on out as goals by Alpha Onyango, Alphonce Omija and Rooney Onyango (2) were enough for the Kenyan’s to set-up a fixture against reigning champions Al Ahly in their next CAF Champions League fixture.
Elsewhere, Tunisian side Monastir took on AS PSI at the Stade Olympique de Sousse this weekend and recorded a 2-0 victory in the process.
Following a 1-0 win in the first-leg, Monastir booked their spot in the next phase of the showpiece courtesy of goals by Iyed Khalifa and Mahmoud Ghorbel with a 2-0 win on home soil.
Also, Ghanaian side Samartex recorded a 1-0 win against Cameroonian side Victoria United at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday. Samartex bagged a 1-0 victory in the first-leg as Isaac Afful’s solitary strike in the return fixture sent the African debutants packing.
