Stellenbosch might have no better chance to avenge their Nedbank Cup semi-final defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns when the two teams clash in the MTN8 at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium on Wednesday, August 28.
Kick-off is at 7pm CAT (SA, GMT+2)
The Maroons lost 2-1 to Bafana ba Style in the final cup competition of 2023-24, but the reigning Premiership champions have since undergone a change at the helm, with Manqoba Mngqithi replacing Rulani Mokwena in the off-season.
Sundowns have only played one match in the new campaign and weren’t at their fluid best as they needed extra time to beat Polokwane City 1-0 in the Wafa Wafa quarter-finals on August 11.
Meanwhile, Steve Barker’s side have hit the ground running in 2024-25 after cruising to a 3-1 victory over TS Galaxy in the previous round and they cleared the first hurdle in the CAF Confederation Cup by dispatching Nsingizini Hotspurs 8-0 on aggregate in the preliminary first round.
Stellies have now reached the last four in five consecutive cup competitions and they finally won their maiden piece of silverware after overcoming the Rockets on penalties in the 2023 Carling Knockout decider.
The Cape Winelands outfit will be hoping to go one better in the MTN8 than last year when they were knocked out by eventual champions Orlando Pirates on away goals in the semi-finals.
Sundowns last won the title in 2021 and they made it to the final in 2023 before succumbing to the Buccaneers on penalties.
