Chippa United have pulled off a coup with the announcement that Stanley Nwabali has extended his stay at the East London-based club.

The Nigeria international attracted widespread interest after helping his country reach the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final and keeping four clean sheets in the process.

Nwabali enjoyed an impressive 2023-24 season with the Chilli Boys, conceding just 23 goals in 26 Premiership appearances, leading to links elsewhere.

However, Chippa have tied down the 28-year-old goalkeeper to a lucrative new three-year contract, while also rewarding him with the captain’s armband for the 2024-25 campaign.

“We are pleased to announce that Stanley Nwabali has signed an improved three-year contract with Chippa United FC,” the club said in a statement on Thursday.

“We are incredibly proud of Stanley’s dedication and commitment to the club. His leadership on and off the field has been exemplary, and we believe he is the right person to guide our team through the challenges ahead. With this been said, Stanley will be our new team captain for the upcoming season.

“We wish Stanley continued success in his career, both in domestic competitions and on the international stage. We look forward to achieving great things together in the seasons to come.”

Nwabali will lead the team out against Orlando Pirates at the Orlando Stadium when the new season gets underway on September 14.
