Egypt and Al Ahly legend Ahmed Fathi has retired from professional football at the age of 39.
Considered by some as one of Africa’s best-ever full-backs, Fathi helped Egypt win three AFCON titles and also lifted four CAF Champions League trophies with Al Ahly.
Fathi, who could also play as a midfielder, had two spells in England turning out for Sheffield United in the Premier League and Hull City in the Championship.
Pyramids confirmed that the Umm Salal and Kazma SC player had retired after helping the the team clinch the 2023/24 Egyptian Cup.
“The Joker. A legend of the Egyptian football legends. Ahmed Fathi hangs up his shoes after years of effort,” a club statement read.
He also won 11 Egyptian Premier League titles and earned 136 caps for Egypt – scoring three goals in the process.
