Two-time AFCON-winning coach Herve Renard has disclosed that he came close to becoming Nigeria’s head coach.
The Frenchman has remained unattached since he decided to not extend his contract with French Football Football as the senior women’s national team head coach in June.
The Super Eagles coaching job has been vacant since June when Finidi George resigned after the team failed to defeat South Africa, and Benin, and Augustine Eguavoen is currently serving as an interim coach.
“I almost went to Nigeria,” Renard, who won the AFCON title with Zambia and Ivory Coast, said on Sport-Ivoire.
“I weighed up the pros and cons for a few days, even a few weeks before refusing it. It is the best offer I have had so far, the rest didn’t suit me.”
Eguavoen will be in charge of Nigeria during the upcoming back-to-back 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Libya on 6 October and 14 October.
