Mitchell Weiser has expressed a desire to represent Algeria at senior level as he believes his chances of featuring at a major tournament are higher with the Fennec Foxes.
The 30-year-old right-back, who can also operate in midfield or on the wing, is a former Germany youth international, but has yet to win a cap for Die Mannschaft.
Weiser is eligible to play for the North Africans through his mother’s heritage and revealed he considered switching allegiances for a long time.
It could now become a reality after Sky Germany reported that the versatile Werder Bremen player has received clearance from FIFA to change federations.
“I have always had the option in mind, as I have the luxury of theoretically being able to play football for two countries,” Weiser said.
“It was always a big goal for me to play in a major championship and I believe that I have a better chance with Algeria. I want to achieve as much as possible in my career.”
