Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface escaped serious injury after his Mercedes collided with a truck on Sunday morning while heading to Frankfurt airport.
The Nigeria international, who scored in the 2-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, was on his way to pick up a friend at the airport when the incident occurred.
Boniface was a passenger in the vehicle and only sustained minor injuries to his hand, with Leverkusen confirming he was doing well after being treated at the hospital.
Hessen state police revealed that the driver lost control of the car as a result of fatigue which caused the accident.
“A 28-year-old was driving a Mercedes in the middle of three lanes in the direction of Frankfurt when, according to his own account, he lost control of the vehicle due to fatigue and collided sideways with a truck that was driving in the right lane next to the Mercedes,” the police report stated.
Boniface posted images and a video of the wrecked Mercedes on Instagram, which has since been deleted, along with the caption “Thank you, Lord. God is the greatest.”
It is the second harrowing experience in the space of a week for the 23-year-old, who was part of the Super Eagles squad that was stranded at Al Abraq International Airport for more than 16 hours without food or water ahead of their abandoned 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya on Tuesday.
